Resolution of Flat Panel Displays has been commonly described in pixels, although the number of pixel of the panel and how it really looks is dependent on the characteristics of the panel type especially in displaying moving picture as in TV programs.
APDC developed a method of measuring and evaluating moving picture display performance in a scale that is close to human vision. This method allows quantitative analysis of resolution which is closely related to the number of pixels of the panel for moving picture.
The measurement simulates human eye system to reconstruct the image which is to be reflected on retina, and quantitatively evaluates the actual resolution which the display can describe. It measures the resolution of moving picture in a way how it really looks in "TV lines" or "deterioration ratio against still picture resolution (%).
| - | Make a follow shot on the resolution chart scrolling on the display. |
| - | Read the resolution scale at the limit point where the pattern can be recognized. |
| - | The resolution, given at the typical speed of "five seconds per screen", is defined as representative value of Moving Picture Resolution. We propose to the Full HD TV manufacturing / sales companies to widely use this indication so that the consumers can easily understand the Moving picture resolution of each display. |
The performance of PDP advanced significantly as the market grew rapidly in the 21st century. From now on, people will be asking for a display device not only by its performance as a display, but also by how much it can describe the true nature of the image. It becomes more important to raise the level of color and brightness which the image is supposed to describe, not only by increasing the number of pixels to display more details.
PDP, which is a self-light-emitting device, has many advantageous characteristics to describe high level picture quality for high resolution, large screen TV's. One of the characteristics is Moving picture resolution. PDP can reproduce clear image of fast moving in sports or a flower field gazing in the wind without any blur. The second characteristic is the color reproduction. PDP can describe primary colors to subtle gradation colors with its true and delicate touch. The third is contrast, which can describe true white and jet black. The firm expression of black enhances thesolidity of the picture, and will even show the glitter in jewels or the touch of jet black fur of a cat as if you could reach out and touch. PDP's beautiful gradation will reproduce delicate feeling or subtle shadow of the object, and will clearly show the details in dark scenes which often appear in movies. Another advantage of PDP is that the contrast and color does not change from any viewing angle. Large size PDP-TV is the key role player in the living room which entertains the family.
APDC works to evolve these advantages of PDP, and will create the future ofPDP-TV to bring joy to all the families in the world.

PDP has a very advanced brightness control technology to minimize visual fatigue.
For example, PDP will pick up the bright area in the screen and display that part in high brightness. If the screen is all white, it will decrease brightness to 1/5. This is why PDP is gentle on the eyes and will minimize the chance of visual disorder even after watching a long movie.
Although the display characteristics of PDP and LCD are very different, they require accurate brightness control to minimize visual fatigue and over exposure.

As a result of comparing PDP-TV and LCD TV, LCD-TV viewer group's grading vision deteriorated after watching LCD-TV. Whereas PDP-TV viewer group's vision did not deteriorate, LCD-TV viewer's vision deteriorated gradually and did not recover completely after a break. Thus LCD-TV can be said to strongly affect the viewer's vision.
As a result of comparing the viewer's subjective symptom of eye tiredness, the experiment statistically confirmed that the number of those who claimed tiredness increased with time in the LCD viewer group.
(F(5,40)=11.305,p<.001) Since the tiredness recovers after approximately 30 minutes break, this symptom of tired eyes can be said to be caused by watching LCD-TV. On the contrary, although few claimed tired eyes before watching, the change in such symptom was not observed in the PDP viewer group. This corresponds with the result of the grading vision and indicates in symptoms as well that LCD-TV affects eye tiredness.

Sub-pixel Controller Dot-by-dot correction for smooth diagonal lines!
Whereas sets of RGB dots were treated as a single pixel in conventional systems, VIERA's Sub-pixel Controller processes each R, G, and B sub-pixel individually. This results in smooth diagonal lines, which otherwise become noticeably jagged or blurred when displayed on a large screen. The Sub-pixel Controller ensures sharp, clear contours.
